Quantity Surveying is primarily centred on the construction business for the management of the costs and budgets of large projects. From the moment, a plan is drawn until a large construction project has been completed, a quantity surveyor is likely to be involved in a legal, technical and financial capacity. The functions of a quantity surveyor are broadly concerned with the control of the cost on construction projects, the management and maintenance of the budget, valuations and any legal matters arising through the course of the project. The objective of the quantity surveying undergraduate degree programme is to provide students with a sound theoretical and practical base to enable them measure, value, cost and specify construction resources, and to become active players in the rational identification, utilization and control of resources within the construction industry.
Graduates of this programme are expected to gain employment in both the private and public sector. The major input of the revised programme is to train quantity surveyors with sufficient skills for the public and private sectors: government ministries, local authorities, departments and parastatals, construction firms, and private consultancy firms offering quantity surveying services.A course in building methods and materials introduces students to issues such as sustainability, cost and risk analysis. It provides students with an understanding of how ordering decisions can affect the cost of the overall project. Since anticipating material costs is a significant part of a quantity surveyor's responsibilities, instruction in materials and methods is often required for aspiring quantity surveyors. This conversion masters provides an opportunity to graduates from disciplines other than surveying to convert their transferable skills and extend their abilities in a critical way to the quantity surveying profession.
