This lecture is a manufactures course required for certification of hybrid and electric vehicle EV systems for passenger cars and light trucks. The history of battery technologies will apply charging and repair techniques from first generation to present day EVs. EV technologies have evolved rapidly, requiring different methods of service for each new generation and system version. High voltage systems are dangerous. Proper safety procedures for hybrid and EV systems are required and emphasized. This course uses actual hybrids and EVs to perform electrical and electronic diagnosis of various systems. Students must have prerequisite knowledge and skill certifications of automotive electronics prior to enrolling in this course. This course is complemented by AUTO 264L Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Operation and Diagnosis Laboratory and AUTO 264TH Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Operation and Diagnosis Assessment Test Out.
Learn to design hybrid power trains which meet the needs of modern vehicles, by combining the strengths of both electric motors and combustion engines
In this course, we will examine different mechanical layouts of hybrid power trains and how they influence the performance and complexity of the power train. Different sizing of power trains in micro, mild, full hybrids, as well as plug-in hybrids, is also discussed and youll learn how they can be modelled and analyzed for example by simulation of driving cycles. You will also learn about the Energy Management system and how this controls the hybrid power train modes and when to charge and discharge the battery.

1. Describe and apply proper hybrid/electric vehicle safety and service procedures.
2. Describe the theory, diagnosis, and repair of vehicle electronic systems as it applies to: high voltage batteries and service; electric motors and controls; regenerative braking systems; transmissions and trans-axles electric machines; high voltage heating and air conditioning.
3. Describe first responded electrical safety and first aid procedures.
