The Bachelor of Science in Electro-Mechanical Technology (BSEMT) is designed to teach students the theory and application of a broad range of electrical, mechanical, computer, control and instrumentation technologies that are used in the industrial automation and manufacturing setting.Basically, mechanical engineering technologists help mechanical engineers design, develop, test, and manufacture mechanical devices, including tools, engines, and machines. They also make sketches and rough layouts, record and analyze data, make calculations and estimates, and report their findings.While mechanical engineers are very design and theory-oriented, mechanical engineer technologists focus on putting ideas into action. For example, a mechanical engineer may design a machine based on engineering principles.Accurately and efficiently create 2D and 3D production drawings using CAD technology.
Use traditional machine tools and computer numerical control technology (CNC) to manufacture production parts following industry standards and safety protocols.
Use knowledge of production tools and equipment, mechanical part design, production planning and work flow methods, and quality assurance tools and techniques, to perform design calculations and evaluate and resolve engineering design and manufacturing issues.
Create professional technical written documents and effectively communicate technical information to appropriate audiences.
Demonstrate professional responsibility: work effectively as a member of a project team; meet deadlines; show respect for coworkers; provide stewardship of resources, equipment and facilities.The basic equipment, processes and services required to produce products are studied. This course is designed to give the student the knowledge and vocabulary to comprehend the complex and inter-related design and manufacturing functions that must be accomplished to produce the end product. The processes covered include the making metal casting, plastics production, hot and cold forming, machining, fastening, non-traditional machining, grinding, etc. Equipment covered in the lab include: lathes, grinders, milling machines, band saws, drill presses, precision measurement devices, basic CNC machine operations and programming will be introduced. Safety and proper manufacturing procedures will be emphasized. Statistical quality control concepts will be introduced.Today's engineering and technology fields and the multifaceted role of the technologist will be explored. Orientation to student services, academic policies, stress management, science study skills, time management, and other college survival skills will be presented. Additional topics of study include applied mathematics, use of scientific calculators, teamwork and problem solving skills in the classroom and laboratory, and an introduction to the physical units and dimensions encountered in the technologies.Work on real-world projects from your first year and participate in an industry work placement as part of your degree, helping you develop professional networks before you graduate and gain the industry experience employers are looking for.

You will complete a minimum of 100 hours of professional work experience in the industry with an approved host organisation (Software Engineering students are required to complete at least 60 days of industry work experience).
